Calming an anxious dog: fireworks, storms, and big noises
Draft · pending vet review · Published 5/21/2026
Noise phobia gets worse over time without intervention. The same dog who is mildly worried at 2 years old can be inconsolable at 6.
During an episode
- Stay calm yourself. Dogs read your tension instantly.
- Don't punish the fear. Cowering, panting, drooling — these aren't disobedience. Punishment makes the phobia worse.
- Offer a safe space. A crate covered with a blanket, a bathroom, or a closet. Dogs naturally seek small enclosed spots when frightened.
- Background noise. TV, radio, or white noise machine masks the trigger.
- Stay with them but don't fuss. Sitting on the couch reading is better than constant petting and cooing.
- Don't leave the house. Dogs panic significantly worse alone during a noise event.
What doesn't help
- Ignoring them ("they'll learn it's fine") — they won't
- Forcing exposure (hold them at the window during fireworks) — guarantees the fear escalates
- Yelling to stop barking — adds to the panic
Things that genuinely help
- Thundershirt / anxiety vest — works for ~70% of dogs. Cheap, no downside to trying.
- Calming chews with L-theanine, valerian, or chamomile. Pet-safe brands only.
- Adaptil diffuser — synthetic dog calming pheromone. Plug it in 24 hours before a known trigger.
- Music — Through a Dog's Ear is a research-backed calming album for dogs.
- Counter-conditioning — under a behaviorist's guidance, you slowly pair the noise (at very low volume) with treats and play until the dog associates the sound with good things. Takes months but works.
When to see your vet
For severe panic, your vet may prescribe situational anti-anxiety medication (e.g., trazodone, gabapentin, or sileo). These are short-acting and given before known trigger events. They are NOT sedatives — sedating an anxious dog makes the fear worse the next time.
GCC-specific triggers
- National Day fireworks (early December in UAE)
- New Year's Eve fireworks
- Construction noise (year-round)
- Air-pressure changes during the few rain storms
- Thunder during summer convective storms in the Hajar Mountains regions
Mark these on your calendar and set yourself up 48 hours in advance.
