Core vaccinations every GCC dog needs
Draft · pending vet review · Published 5/21/2026
GCC veterinary authorities (DHA, MOCCAE, Saudi MEWA, Qatar's Ministry of Municipality) share the same core protocol for dogs. Skipping a shot — or stretching the schedule — leaves your pet exposed and may block international travel.
Core vaccines (every dog)
- Rabies — required by law in all GCC countries. First shot at 12 weeks, booster at 1 year, then every 1–3 years depending on the vaccine and country.
- Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza (DHPP) — combo shot. Puppies: 8, 12, and 16 weeks. Adults: every 3 years after the 1-year booster.
- Leptospirosis — recommended in GCC due to rodent exposure. Annual.
Non-core but commonly recommended
- Bordetella (kennel cough) — required by most boarding facilities and dog parks. Annual.
- Canine influenza — if your dog frequents social settings.
Pet passport / international travel
- Rabies vaccine must be administered at least 21 days before travel
- Some countries require titer test (FAVN) — usually for non-EU destinations
- Microchip first, vaccinate second — the chip must be registered before the rabies shot for the passport to be valid
Common questions
Can I skip rabies if my dog never leaves the house? No — required by law and your pet can still encounter wildlife (mice, bats) that carry it.
Are 3-year vaccines safer than 1-year? Same vaccine, different labeling. 3-year approved means the protection lasts that long.
My dog had a vaccine reaction last time. What now? Tell your vet — they may give a Benadryl injection pre-vaccine or split the combo into separate visits.
